Get Your Garden Ready for Autumn

Get Your Garden Ready for Autumn

As the seasons shift, now is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the colder months ahead. It might feel early, especially if summer flowers are still going strong but autumn is a busy season for gardeners. A little preparation now will make all the difference when winter arrives. Here are some key ways to get your outdoor space ready:

1. Clear Up with Care

Tidy your garden by removing fallen leaves and debris that could harbour pests or disease, while keeping seedheads, wood piles and sheltered corners for wildlife to feed and hibernate. Rake leaves off the lawn to make nutritious leaf mould, and clean paths, patios and decking so they’re safe and less slippery in wet weather.

2. Prune and Trim

Cut back dead or overgrown branches from shrubs and trees to encourage healthy growth and prevent disease. Perennials that have finished flowering can also be tidied up – but leave a few standing for winter structure and to provide food and shelter for insects and birds.

3. Improve the Soil

Spread a layer of well-rotted compost or organic mulch over beds and borders. This not only enriches the soil but also helps retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds, giving your plants a head start for spring.

4. Protect Tender Plants

Some plants can shrug off frost, but others need a little extra help. Move pots of tender plants into sheltered spots or cover shrubs and young trees with horticultural fleece. Protecting them now will ensure they bounce back full of life next year.

5. Plant and Sow for Spring

Autumn is the best time to plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips and crocuses. Plant them at the recommended depth for a brilliant display next year. It’s also ideal for dividing overcrowded perennials, transplanting shrubs, or collecting seeds to sow again next season.
