After a busy summer of parties, barbecues and family kickabouts, it’s no wonder that lawns can start to look a little worn by the time autumn arrives. But this is actually the perfect season to give your grass a little extra attention. With the right care now, your lawn will be strong, green and ready to thrive again next spring.
Here are six simple autumn lawn care tips to keep your grass in top condition:
Mow on a higher setting
Set your mower blades higher than usual, leaving the grass around 5–7cm (2–2.5in) long. This allows the lawn to soak up as much autumn sunshine as possible, storing vital energy to see it through winter.
Scarify if needed
Take a close look at the base of your grass. If you can see the soil between blades, scarifying isn’t necessary. But if you find a layer of moss or thatch (matted dead grass), rake it out firmly with a spring tine rake. For bigger lawns, hiring a mechanical scarifier will save time and effort.
Aerate the soil
Compacted ground prevents healthy growth, so aerating is essential. On smaller lawns, use a garden fork, pushing it deep into the soil and gently easing it back to lift the ground slightly. Repeat at intervals across the lawn. Larger lawns benefit from a mechanical aerator. Aeration boosts oxygen levels, improves drainage, and helps grass out-compete moss and weeds.
Apply a top dressing
After aerating, spread a thin layer of top dressing evenly with a broom or rubber rake. This improves soil structure, drainage, and helps smooth out small dips in the surface. Work in small amounts at a time to avoid smothering the grass.
Overseed bare patches
Autumn is the ideal time to sow grass seed. Scatter seed by hand or with a spreader, making two passes at right angles for even coverage. Overseeding fills in gaps and encourages thicker, healthier growth.
Feed your lawn
Switch to an autumn lawn feed that’s rich in potassium rather than nitrogen. Potassium strengthens the grass and improves its resistance to frost and disease, setting it up for a strong recovery next year.
