Few things are more satisfying than relaxing in the dappled shade of a tree you’ve planted yourself. Not only can a tree transform your garden by adding height, shape, and seasonal interest, it also creates a haven for birds and other wildlife. Follow our simple guide to give your new tree the best start in life.
How to Plant a Tree
- Water Before Planting
Soak the rootball thoroughly before planting—submerge it in a bucket of water for a few minutes to hydrate the roots.
- Dig the Right Hole
Dig a square hole the same depth as the rootball and three times as wide. Square sides help roots spread more easily. Loosen the edges with a garden fork, especially in clay soil, to prevent compacted “walls” that roots can’t penetrate.
- Prepare the Roots
Remove the tree from its container and gently tease out any tangled roots so they grow outward.
- Set the Correct Depth
Position the tree so the base of the trunk (where roots meet stem) sits level with the surrounding soil. Use a cane across the hole to check—burying the trunk can cause rot.
- Face it the Right Way
Turn the tree so its best side faces the area where it will be most admired.
- Backfill and Firm
Refill the hole with soil, gently firming it down with the heel of your boot to remove air pockets. Check the tree is upright.
- Mulch Generously
Water well, then mulch with bark chips or compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rotting.
- Stake for Support
Using a mallet, drive a stake into the ground at a 45° angle and secure with a flexible tree tie.
Aftercare
Water regularly during the first two years, especially in dry weather. Check the tree tie to ensure it isn’t digging into the bark. Once the tree is well established, remove the stake.
